Good Question!
As a search engine marketer, I think more about proper coding i try to stick to XHTML 1.0 Strict, <META> data and tagging are extremely important for website promotion too along with rich content on my web pages as then search engine bots decide if your pages are worthy enough. I think social networks like my space and face book are the future to promoting websites as you can target a lot of individuals on a high scale.
